August FairTax E-Newsletter

August 20, 2005  ·  Filed under: AFFT Updates

This month’s FairTax E-Newsletter has arrived. Below is the full newsletter. This particular paragraph caught my attention:

We’re getting as many as 5,000 new petition signers and members a day! Our floors are creaking. Our phone lines are overwhelmed. Our website is humming. We need you, today, to help us handle this torrent of new supporters brought in by the congressman and Neal’s great publicity. Will you help? Volunteers are needed today to show up at their congressman’s and senators’ August recess town hall meetings, speak to groups, and write letters to the editor and more! Please contact us today if we can count on you to help.

This is great news.

Full newsletter pasted below... If you haven’t done so already, be sure and sign up to receive the newsletter directly.

Letter from the Executive Director:

Who would have believed it? The FairTax Book went from unavailable to the public to #1 on the New York Times Best Sellers list - in nine days!!! Tell your congressman that American taxpayers are speaking!
Can I say any more? You did it. We started off as number #1. Only you could have made that happen. But the battle has just begun and this is just the first step. The first product. Now the job is to keep the book at number #1 for as long as possible.

Support that book tour!

Talk show host Neal Boortz and Congressman John Linder are on a national book tour. Many bookstores have sold out, some before Neal arrived. Respected publisher Harper/Collins/Regan is on its fourth reprinting of the book. You should be pleased. That battle is won. But the war goes on. We need to keep it number #1.

Help us activate new members!

Grassroots update: Massive turnout at Congressman John Linder and Neal Boortz’s book signings

Books were sold out in Buckhead, GA, Lawrenceville, GA, Cobb County, GA, Jacksonville, FL, Fayetteville, NC, and Greensboro, NC. Our volunteers are doing a great “get out the vote” campaign to turn out the people. Some stores are allowing petition signing and literature distribution. Click here to see first-hand accounts and pictures at stops all over the country.

Send the link on your local event to your congressman’s and senators’ tax aides.

After taking a look at the photos of your local event, send the link to your congressman’s tax aide. There is nothing more real to an elected official than photos of voters packing a bookstore! Send ‘em the link and then call ‘em to follow up.

Your state legislators are also important to the FairTax movement.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the largest organization of state legislators, meets regularly to share successes and failures across state lines. Remember, the Constitution requires state legislatures to ratify any constitutional amendment, which means ALEC’s membership needs to be educated in the FairTax - to say nothing of the fact that our termination of the federal income tax code and expunging of 1040s will require at least 38 states to rethink their income tax systems.

So we attend ALEC, the National Foundation for Women Legislators, and the National Council of State Legislators.

At ALEC, we had a solid group of great volunteers cover this booth for us and get signatures from many state representatives and some senators in support of the FairTax getting a thorough review and objective hearing. We appreciate their support. Your help is needed today to get your state representative or your state senator to sign this letter. You may download the letter here. E-mail headquarters at chris.marks@fairtax.org for full directions on how you can be one of the 250 volunteers working nationally on this project that will ensure the repeal of the 16th Amendment.

Volunteer of the month: Robert Semands of Oklahoma

Our featured volunteer of the month is volunteer co-state director Robert Semands of Oklahoma. Robert has met his “on-the-fence” congressman at nearly every scheduled stop in the district. Robert has been the perfect example of how to lobby your congressman this August recess. He has brought different people to the town hall events and other meetings at separate times. They have all lobbied the congressman in multiple ways on co-sponsoring the FairTax bill.

Robert has also been recruiting other volunteers at a breakneck speed and is building a true presence in the community. The most recent opportunity he has come across is a high school teacher willing to teach his class about the FairTax. That teacher needs to have 50 of the FairTax books donated. Robert needs contributions to cover that cost. If you are interested in giving to that specific project, please e-mail us at Jon@fairtax.org with the words “class books” in the subject line and your phone number and a time when you can be reached. Someone will call and get your information over the phone. Thanks Robert! Your help is invaluable. With work like Robert’s, we’ll see his congressman as a FairTax co-sponsor soon.

Important note: If you are willing to go to a town hall meeting please e-mail aaron.schutte@fairtax.org and he will get you set up ASAP.

If you know a volunteer you think should be featured in this newsletter please send an e-mail to aaron.schutte@fairtax.org with why you believe that person should be singled out and recognized for their contributions. And remember, we’re talking contributions, not promises! We wish we could do more!

Media update:

The release of Congressman John Linder and Neal Boortz’s The FairTax Book brought us into a flurry of media activity the likes of which we had never seen!! We were privileged to have Congressman Linder do 19 radio shows in two days and to appear with Neal Boortz on the famous Fox show Hannity & Colmes for an excellent 10-minute explanation of the FairTax. Press like this is worth a million! Click here to see this history-making show: http://fairtaxvolunteer.org/news/video.html and http://fairtaxvolunteer.org/news/index.html.

A FairTax Frequently Asked Question
(Read the entire FAQ online)

How does the rebate work?

All valid Social Security cardholders who are U.S. residents receive a monthly rebate equivalent to the FairTax paid on essential goods and services, also known as the poverty level expenditures. The rebate is paid in advance, in equal installments each month. The size of the rebate is determined by the Department of Health & Human Services’ poverty level multiplied by the tax rate. This is a well-accepted, long-used poverty-level calculation that includes food, clothing, shelter, transportation, medical care, etc. See chart in Figure 1.
