Let’s Throw a FairTax Tea Party

All of the people who write for this blog, and many of those who read it, are passionate about getting the FairTax enacted into law. But at times, it’s not easy to get the ear of legislators.

200 years ago, the founding fathers of this country had the same problem. They kept petitioning the King of England with redress of grievances brought upon this nation by the Crown. The King stopped listening, and even went so far as to enact a tax on tea. So we went into Boston Harbor, we tossed that tea overboard, and galvanized a nation. That got the King’s attention.

Fellow blogger Eric Cowperthwaite, of Eric’s Grumbles Before the Grave, has suggested we do the same.

So, here’s the idea. Many Americans are completely disgusted with the government right now and feel, rightly, that they are no longer represented. We feel that we are being taxed, and our tax money being used without our consent, in ways that are flat out wrong. We hate the pork spending we see every day while our government spends more and more money that they have borrowed, which leads to even more taxes in the future. We once sent a message to the King of England that he couldn’t ignore (after years of ignoring our petitions and pleas). Let’s send a signal to Washington that has its roots in the origin of our country, one that they can’t misunderstand.

Here’s how to do it. Write your Senators and Representatives a letter, with details of where you take issue with their actions. A physical letter, not an email. Then tuck a tea bag into the letter. Send it to the local office, not the DC office. If you send it to DC, they will probably never receive the tea bag due to the postal security around Congress. In the next day or two I’m going to have put together a way for everyone doing it to let me know who they’ve sent tea bags to, and why.

I think this is a heck of an idea, and it is suited to the FairTax. We’re trying to enact a tax revolution, and I think it’s time to throw a FairTax Tea Party. I can think of one Senator right here in Georgia, Johnny Isakson, that’s going to receive a letter and a tea bag from yours truly. I suggest others do the same. I would like to echo the words of Eric, and suggest you send the letter to their local offices, not to the Washington address. Capitol Hill mail is heavily scrutinized, and a tea bag might raise some red flags, keeping the mail (or the tea bag) from reaching its intended party.

If you happen to do this, check back at Eric’s blog, as he is planning to put a tracking mechanism together, like Porkbusters for N.Z. Bear. If you need, feel free to email me or post in a comment here, and I’ll make sure it’s tracked accordingly.
