Potential Presidential Candidate Supports NRST

From the Associated Press story “Chicago businessman gauging run at White House”:

A wealthy Chicago investment adviser, John Cox, is in the state this weekend hoping to get support in his effort to secure the GOP nomination to run for president.

Cox, whose only prior elected office was a stint on the Glenview school board at age 27, said he believes voters want someone who’s not a career politician.

Cox ran unsuccessfully for the GOP nomination in the 10th Congressional District in Illinois in 2000 and for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate in 2002.

Cox described himself as a “progressive conservative” and proposed to eliminate the income tax, replacing it with a national sales tax.

He argued most problems are better solved by the free market and not by government. He said he supports the war in Iraq and believes providing the Iraqi people with greater economic opportunities will help bring peace.

“I’ve got enough money to get a seat at the table and I’m going to get my ideas heard,” he said in a phone interview on his way to Dover on Friday.

UPDATE: You can learn more about Cox on his web site. And he had this to say (in response to an e-mail inquiry) about the FairTax:

I am absolutely aware of the Fair Tax and I support it with one modification. The fair tax is estimated to be 23%, in order to replace both the income tax and the payroll taxes we now pay. I believe that our Social Security system should be based upon individual private accounts and not derived from general revenues of the government. Therefore, I favor limiting the national sales tax to 15% and providing for the remainder to be collected from individuals and put into private accounts for social security.

I have many fair tax advocates supporting my campaign and I would hope to count you among them. Check out some of the articles written about my campaign at my website cox2008.com. Many Republicans are not delighted in their choices for 2008 and are seeing my campaign as one founded on issues and principles.

  1. to all representatives and senators

i belive most our represesentive are not listening to what being said. you all ask what i can i do help better our lives ,but all you do is tax us to death. im working person haven’t missed a days work in 3yrs, but the one that you representive can do for us let us have what we earn. the the more i work the more uncle same takes out more and my family gets less. but if the fair tax is a way that i can work harder and be better for it, i think its time that the goverment gets out of our pockets and let us make the decsion how we spend our money. right now you get first chance and so much money is wasted. its time we get to take charge of finaces without the goverment. there is one problem the fait tax will create more income for goverment and they will need to think more i what they are spending.my vote fair tax to repalce the income for the state and fereral goverment.
